5 Things to Do at Colonial Park in Somerset, NJ

Colonial Park in Somerset, NJ

If you are looking to spend time outside with your whole family, plan a day trip to Colonial Park. There is lots to see and do year-round, so stop by and enjoy the beautiful scenery along the Delaware and Raritan Canal and along the Millstone River.

  1. Take a Walk
  2. The walking trails in Colonial Park go on for miles, winding along the edges of ponds, through the trees, and past well maintained gardens. Many of the trails are paved, making them easily accessible for children in strollers. Plan your route accordingly and enjoy an afternoon stroll in the park with your whole family.

  3. Go Fishing
  4. Colonial Park is dotted with water features, but three of the park’s ponds offer something extra. The NJ State Division of Fish, Game, and Wildlife stocks these three ponds each year, allowing aspiring anglers to test their skills in a low key, relaxed environment. Spending the morning in Colonial Park is a great way to go fishing without making the trek to one of the area’s more well-known fishing spots.

  5. Pack a Picnic
  6. Picnic tables and barbeque grills are scattered throughout the park and can be used by anyone. As you walk through the park, plan to stop along the way and have a snack or cook some hot dogs for dinner.

If you have a large party or family reunion, there are two picnic areas that can be reserved by groups of at least 20 people. The Knob Hill Pavilion seats up to 150 and can be easily reached by car. This pavilion is also adjacent to a playground, so you can let the kids run around and play while the adults catch up or prepare lunch.

The Pine Grove pavilion can be found near the softball fields. This pavilion is slightly smaller, with seating for up to 100 guests. It is also near a playground: the Morgan Pellowski playground. This modern playground consists of barrier-free equipment, allowing kids of all ability levels the opportunity to enjoy the park.

  7. Dog Park
  8. There is no need to leave your dog at home. Pets are welcome throughout the park as long as they are on a leash. Stop by one of Colonial Park’s dog parks to let your pet run around off leash. Your dog will love the opportunity to make new friends and burn off some energy before continuing to stroll around the park.

  9. Play Golf
  10. Also in Colonial Park, you will find the Spooky Brook Golf Course. This 18 hole course is known for its wide-open spaces, making it great for players of all skill levels. While the course has some challenging sections to keep things interesting, even new players will not find the course too frustrating.
