Visit the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge
Entry to this 7,600 acres of wilderness is free. It is open from sun-up to sundown the whole year round. Admire the birds, including various waterfowl species. Explore trails, hunt for frogs in the marshes, and admire the skies with a pair of binoculars. Ask the Helen C. Fenske Visitor Center staff for assistance. Consult a map, choose the areas you want to visit, and check out programs and learning opportunities.
Hike off to Duke Farms
James Buchanan Duke’s legacy is a source of environmental education, conservation, and horticultural research. It offers bike trails, walking trails, scavenger hunts, bird watching, and others. Entry to this popular place is free. The farm is open 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday.
Explore parks
Monument Square Park in the middle of New Brunswick is a tourist spot that honors those who perished in the American Civil War. This public place is open 24/7, Monday to Sunday. Monuments teach free history lessons about influencers of the past. Good restaurants, theaters, and other attractions are around the corner.
Washington Valley Park boasts Buttermilk Falls, a waterfall flowing from a man-made dam and emptying into a cool swimming area. Visitors can enjoy shoreline fishing along the various trails of the Washington Valley Reservoir at the center of the park. They can also go mountain biking along a network of trails. Entrance to the park, which is open from sun-up to sundown, is free.
Have fun at Kidstreet Playground
Over 10 acres of fun await kids in this traditional wooden playground near Bridgewater Municipal Complex. Ride a pirate ship. Feel the wind whoosh past you at the zip line. Climb and play all you want. Have a picnic with friends and family.
Shop at Bridgewater Farmers Market
Enjoy live music while shopping for fresh fruits, veggies, locally-grown meats and other goodies. Booths are located in Bridgewater library parking lot at Vogt Drive. The market is open 10 a.m. to 2 pm. every Sunday.
Go to East Jersey Old Town Village
Go back in time when merchant and farm villages dotted this town during and after the American Revolution. Go on a free tour of 16 reconstructed buildings dating as far back as the 18th and 19th centuries. Historical interpreters are there to assist you.
Watch a Somerset Patriots baseball game at TD Bank Ballpark
Baseball lovers and onlookers can enjoy an action-packed night of fireworks, freebies, and guest appearances. It’s also a great way to bond with the family.
